Polymide-Based Filament Heater (V1)

I designed a 12 V filament heater/dryer that reliably reaches and holds up to 110 °C for moisture removal and light annealing. V1 prioritizes simplicity, safety, and low cost: polyimide heater pads provide uniform heat, and a W1209 thermostat (on/off control with adjustable hysteresis) manages temperature without the complexity or price of a full PID system.

Key Features

  • 110 °C setpoint capability with user-tuned hysteresis for stable holds.

  • 12 V polyimide heaters for fast, even heating and straightforward power integration.

  • Air circulation for improved chamber uniformity.

  • Safety first: inline blade fuse on the heater circuit, normally-open relay behaviour (fails off), and a one-shot thermal cutoff mounted near the hottest surface.

  • Serviceable design: modular heater plate, accessible wiring, strain-relieved sensor routing, and replaceable fan.

  • Scalable volume: enclosure sized to accommodate up to a 1 kg spool (universal)

Roadmap (V2+)

  • PID control with ramp/soak profiles for even tighter tolerances

  • Integrated dehumidification (Rosahl membrane bay) and data logging (ESP32)

  • Enhanced insulation
